Everything I learned in Job Search Master Class® resulted in a position at Microsoft as an engineer in Azure Storage. Not only is it a great job, it’s the one I really wanted.
What challenges did you face in your job search?
In the military for 20 years, I had not written a résumé or looked for a job in decades, so I didn’t even know where to start. And I didn’t know how to communicate my military experience and vocabulary in terms that civilian employers could understand.
How did you use Job Search Master Class®?
I went through the Job Search Master Class® for Veterans very systematically. I downloaded the material for each lesson and followed along with every video ensuring that I understood the purpose of the lesson, how it pertained to the job search, and how to implement it in my plan. I conducted additional research on each lesson to further my knowledge.
Step by step, I researched key words to add to my résumé, had my résumé proofread by a number of people, applied for various positions by changing my résumé to fit the requirements for each one, and tracked each application using the Job Tracker.
I spent approximately 2 hours each evening doing research on companies and positions, searching for people to network with, documenting whom I needed to follow up with, removing stale applications from my tracker, and applying for new positions.
Because I followed the course in every aspect, it was easy to keep track of my activities. Had I not followed the course as prescribed I would have spent much more time trying to organize and keep track of everything.
What were your key benefits from Job Search Master Class®?
I applied for positions in all areas that fit my background and expertise – approximately 80 jobs, interviewed for 12 of them, completed second round interviews for 8, and received an offer for 6 positions. Particularly helpful was networking with personnel at each company I applied to; I specifically looked for someone that worked in HR or for the team I applied to.
Completing the Job Search Master Class® for Veterans and using everything I learned resulted in a position at Microsoft as an engineer in Azure Storage. Not only is it a great job, it’s the one I really wanted.
My advice? Do the JSMC-V completely; I even went through all of the bonus material. By carefully completing all the lessons, I was able to highlight unique skills I have because of my specialized military background. I interviewed successfully and negotiated a substantial salary offer using the course methods. Now I am confident that I can successfully look for a job anytime the need arises.
